We all feel sad, tearful, and hopeless at times. Sometimes it is because of circumstance such as losing a loved one or a job, and other times it may be “the blues” that last a few days. Feeling blue is common and usually doesn’t really change our life significantly.
However, individuals with major depressive disorder lose interest in things they once enjoyed. It can be difficult to simply get out of bed in the morning. Goals and life plans end up not getting done which leads to feeling shame and worthlessness.
According to the DSM-5, depression occurs when an individual has five or more of the following symptoms almost every day of the week for at least two weeks:
· Depressed mood or sadness.
· Loss of interest or pleasure in people, events, and activities once enjoyed.
· Sudden or recent weight changes (gain, losses, or appetite change).
· Trouble sleeping or sleeping too much.
· Feeling restless or the opposite, feeling like you are moving and speaking slowly.
· Feeling tired.
· Feeling worthless or guilty.
· Trouble making decisions or staying focused on tasks at hand.
· Regular thoughts of death and suicide.

It is important to note that you may not have all of these symptoms. You only need to have the first two symptoms present. They must interfere with your every day life such as social, work, school, etc.
Fortunately, there are many treatment options for depression. Everyone’s depression looks a little bit different because everyone is different. What you need to help you feel better will look and feel different than anyone else’s. It is important to find a therapist who understands you and how to help you move from pain to peace.
I hope this article has helped explain some of the symptoms of depression. Please keep in mind this article is not intended as professional therapy or clinical advice. If you need help with a mental health issue you are facing, please contact a licensed mental health clinician.
I wish you well.
